I was wondering about the recent bankruptcy of Korean shipper Hanjin. Will it effect Kia and Hyundai. The answer is probably not.

The Soul EV is manufactured at Gwangju. From there it is either
trucked to Mokpo and exported directly from there or
trucked to Pyeongtaek Port or transshipped from Mokpo port to Pyeongtaek for export.

From there it is loaded onto a giant car carrier. 10 days to LA, and 30 days to Europe.
The ships from Pyeongtaek are mostly EuKor - a Norwegian / Korean shipper. see - http://www.eukor.com/ek/homepage/03_AboutUS/introduction.do
EuKor is 20% owned by Hyundai / Kia.
The ships from Mokpo are mostly Glovis a Korean / Norwegian shipper. Same companies as EuKor but with share holdings reversed.

update: Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics is actually 50% Norwegian and 50% Swedish. I missed out the Swedish part earlier.

bankrupty source of Cargo designed Owner : http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-09-01/supply-chain-contagion-arrives-hanjin-bankruptcy-roils-global-trade-freezes-ships-ra

The Korea International Trade Association said on Thursday that about 10 Hanjin vessels in China have been either seized or were expected to seized by charterers, port authorities or other parties. That adds to one other ship seized in Singapore by a creditor earlier this week.

After Hanjin's banks decided to end financial support for the shipper, which immediately catalyzed its insolvency proceedings, many of its vessels have either been denied entry to ports or unable to dock as container lashing providers worry that they will not be paid. This includes the port of Busan, South Korea's largest.

The car terminal at Pyeongtaek Port is run by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics. It is the container terminal that is run by Hanjin.
Cars assembled in Korea are shipped out of the car terminal, hence not effected by Hanjin's bankruptcy.
Cars assembled abroad with Korean parts are greatly effected because they are in the containers.
This will possibly hinder the upcoming launch of both the C hevy B olt (LG) and the M ercedes EQ EV (SK).

Some more details of the shipping routes learned by reading the Norwegian I oniq forum. People who have pre-ordered a car are tracking the progress of the ships. The first ship carrying I oniq EVs left Ulsan port six weeks ago. Stopped a day later at Pyeongtaek. Went though the Suez canal. Now arriving at Walhamn port in Sweden. The cars will be loaded onto a train and taken from there to Norway. The other two ports of call in Europe are Southampton and Bremerhaven.

On the Norwegian I oniq forum - http://elbilforum.no/forum/index.php/topic,29410.0.html
There are roughly 1000 pre-orders for the I oniq EV in Norway. The first 66 were loaded onto the Asian Trust on 31/8/16. Then 98 more on the 6/9/16 onto the Asian Empire. They have been following the passage of those boats, the first of which has now 20/10/16 arrived in Sweden.

There is also a forum for German drivers who have pre-ordered the I oniq EV - http://www.goingelectric.de/forum/hyundai-ioniq/hyundai-ioniq-bestellt-t18754.html
They are expecting the boat with their cars to arrive in Bremerhaven on the 31/10/16

According to this article in the Korean press 현대차, 아이오닉 일렉트릭 올해 수출 물량 내수로 돌린다 18/10/16
Hyundai claims 4000 cars have been ordered in Korea. 1300 delivered and 2700 waiting. It is suggested that production took a hit because of strikes and typhoons. Many cars are already on their way to Europe and will be delivered, but from now on exports will be halted while the Korean backlog is filled.

Have now found a great list for Norwegian registrations. Over 1/3 of all Soul EVs are in Norway.
