To add some clarity to this thread -

July 2015 - SK Innovation doubles EV battery production - from 400 to 800MWh
Mar 2016 - SK Innovation boosts battery production by 25% - from 800 - 1000MWh

That is all that has happened in the last 2 years. The Soul EV production numbers went up from 5,000 cars in the first year to 10,000 in the second. Seems it will stay at 10,000 for another year.

We recently see a pushevs.com article suggesting that there was a 25% increase last month but that is merely because a lazy journalist cut and pasted that line from a previous article written in April.

Lots of suggestions in July this year that SK Innovation would ramp up production for the forthcoming M ercedes SUV. But what actually appeared at the Paris Motor Show was a concept car that won't be produced for 3 years. - Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ – Photos & Videos From Paris

No details of any improvement in cell chemistry. No sign of any increase in capacity to allow for the Kia Soul EV to have a bigger pack. I assume this will happen early next year.

Another expansion has been announced.

------------------------------------------------------
Details for the 2015 s550e from 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-In Hybrid Quick Drive
The 8.7 kW-hr lithium-ion battery sits above the rear axle and is water-cooled. Weighing in at 251 pounds, the battery pack occupies 3.4 cubic feet of space above the rear axle, reducing the trunk capacity to 12.2 cubic feet, compared to 16.3 cubic feet in non-hybrid models. The hybridized S-Class features a 3.6 kW on-board c harger with the connection for the cable located in the rear bumper on the passenger side. M ercedes says charging the battery should take approximately two hours and 45 minutes using a level 2 c harger, and wireless charging is on the way.
Confirmation here that the 8.7 is total capacity (only 6.4 kWh is usable). 2016 Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-In Hybrid: First Drive

The 2017 s550e now has a 13.5 kW-hr lithium-ion battery. SK makes the cells but Daimler subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE makes them into a pack.
see - Mercedes S550e to Get Increased Electric Range; V-8s and V-12s Will Continue
The current S550e has an 8.7-kWh battery pack, but the face-lifted car will have a 13.5-kWh unit that will fit in the same space and—at around 260 pounds—weigh almost exactly the same.

There is not enough info here to make any guesses as to whether SK has improved their battery cells. We just know that these cells are more energy dense than whoever made the previous ones.

------------------------------------------------------

The 200MWh expansion of the Seosan battery plant is enough for about 15,000 of these PHEV battery packs each year. The S550e only sells in the hundreds. There must be further announcements to come of new releases from Daimler.

Always interesting to know where the Soul EVs are actually going, given that sales figures in so many counties are so low.

It is Norway. Over a third of all the cars produced are in Norway. Here is Norwegian registration data for Sept 2016 - http://elbilforum.no/forum/index.php/topic,5991.msg512756.html?

Looking at this thread - Shipping the Soul EV out of Korea. it seems that Norway is where most of the I oniq EVs will go as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have now found a great list for Norwegian registrations. Over 1/3 of all Soul EVs are in Norway.
Norwegian Kia Soul EV registrations
This has VIN numbers, so we can easily see how many Soul EVs have been built so far.
It is clear from these VIN numbers that about 1000 cars are produced each month
It also show how many of those were directly sent to Norway as new cars and how many were imported as used.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outside of Norway the numbers are - via http://ev-sales.blogspot.com
Total Sales for the first 9 months of 2016

Germany 857
France 725
Austria 213
Switzerland 95
Spain 66
Netherlands 44

Belgium 25
Denmark 15
Europe EU 2081 (need to add UK and Norway to get Europe)

Norway sales of new cars - 986 - so where did the other 1891 registered Soul EVs in Norway come from?
They cannot all come from Germany! It seems very unlikely that most are coming from the EU as part of an emissions scam.
I am not sure that the numbers and commentary produced by sites such as ev-sales.blogspot.com and insideevs.com is valid.

Seems UK + a few others with very low sales sold 117

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Europe 3184 ( from http://ev-sales.blogspot.kr/2016/10/europe-september-2016.html)

USA 1.162
Canada 459
North America 1621

Korea 467

Global sales YTD is between 5272 and 7163 The large range is because I don't know where an extra 1891 registered Soul EVs in Norway came from?
Seen the number 7626 for Global sales YTD - http://weekly.cnbnews.com/news/article.html?no=120161
So the extra 1891 in Norway are not taking away from the EU sales reported.
My guess is that the 2016 production to date is 10,000+, so the unsold inventory is quite high.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chinese sales of the BAIC E-Series EV are as always exactly on target. 15,457 YTD

Total yearly production by SK Innovation = 1,200MWh

BAIC E-Series EV 20,000 cars annually -> 30.5 * 20,000 = 610,000kWh
Kia Soul EV 12,000 cars annually -> 30.5 * 12,000 = 366,000kWh
Daimler PHEVs 15,000 cars annually -> 13.3 * 15,000 = 199,500kWh

Total = 1,175.5MWh = 47,000 cars

Leaves 24.5MWh for various minor projects such as the Kia Ray EV and the Kantor Fuso Truck.

There is a lot of news about another big battery expansion. A quadrupling! This time its for M ercedes Benz EVs to be launched from next year on. The second plant will be built adjacent to the first at Seosan, and will be completed by 2018.
(Although in Korean news it suggests that only 800MWh of the 3000MWh has been contracted for by M ercedes)

Pushevs seems to have found the news first.
SK Innovation to quadruple EV battery cell production in 2018

Update 14th Nov
Some extra detail from - http://www.sedaily.com/NewsView/1L3YV667RC
The expansion will be a 2nd building - 40,000 square meters. This is similar in size to the existing No. 1 plant.
The original plant builds the whole pack, this new plant just produces the cells.
All battery cells produced by the new line supplied to the Daimler Benz.
Daimler's subsidiary, Deutsche Accumotive will build the packs at the new Kamenz plant.
Investment by SK at Seosan ~$170 million USD. Investment by Daimler at Kamenz ~$543 million USD.

From Kia Soul EV sales near 20,000 units

As of end-October, 19,968 units of the small SUV electric car have been sold worldwide,
Given that we hit 10,000 sales early in the year, and 20,000 at the end of October that means sales are almost exactly 1,000 / month. This matches the production figures. Somewhere there are more sales than I thought, given that I counted up the reported sales and have it behind production by two or three thousand.

Update - checked the latest figures as reported in the Korean news.
From - http://news.newsway.co.kr/view.php?tp=1&ud=2016112811312274716&md=20161128113343_AO
쏘울EV는 출시 첫해인 2014년 국내외에서 2235대가 팔렸고, 2015년에는 연간 1만대 판매 고지를 넘어 총 1만865대가 팔렸다. 올해는 10월까지 6868대가 팔렸다.
This is 2,235 sales in 2014, 10,865 sales in 2015 and 6,868 sales for the first ten months of this year. So cumulative figures for last year where higher than we reported before. But sales for this year match what I said earlier. "Global sales YTD is between 5272 and 7163"

Have finally found a decent source for the number or Soul EVs sold each year. (Although only outside of Korea).
http://pr.kia.com/en/company/ir/ir-library/sales-results.do
You need to download the Overseas Retail Sales spreadsheet.
Look on this thread for the Korean data - Soul EV purchase incentives in Seoul, South Korea

The figures are ( Year :- Overseas + Domestic = Total )
Code:
2014 :- 1,017 + 414 = 1,431
2015 :- 7,286 + 1,116 = 8,402
2016 :- 7,123 + 729 = 7,852
2017 :- 532 + ??

That 20,000 number in October 2016 must have been for production not sales. Hence I'm guessing that by the current date in March 2017 there must be about 5,000 unsold Soul EVs globally.

A new article about the battery plant expansion. - SK Innovation set to expand EV battery capacity
...
The proposal calls for the construction of two EV battery production lines, which will churn out EV cells with a combined 2 GWh, larger than its current 1.9 GWh capacity. The construction of the two production lines in Seosan, some 150 kilometers south of Seoul, will be completed by the first half of next year, with their operation starting before the end of next year. In 2015, SK Innovation already doubled its EV battery-making capacity. SK Innovation said it already has an order backlog that will keep it busy for seven years...
The previous article stated current capacity as 1 GWh being expanded to 4 GWh. Now it's from 1.9 GWh to 3.9 GWh.
There's a possibility that this is confirming an increase in the existing line due to improved battery chemistry.
Same number of cells but more capacity. Also possible that one or both of the articles is just a mistake.

Lots of news articles from a recent press conference by SK Innovation. Seems they are planning to greatly increase battery production.

In the immediate future. - http://english.etnews.com/20170531200002
"SK Innovation is planning to increase output of its batteries from 1.1GWh, which is based on end of last year, to 10GWh by 2020"

From - http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=3034011
"Yoon Ye-seon, president of the battery & I/E Materials division, said upon construction of a second battery plant in Korea this year, the company will build a factory in Eastern Europe to fulfil battery orders from Daimler AG. ,"

And before 2025 SK Innovation is planning to invest more than $8.89 billion USD. That is enough for two T esla Gigafactories.

PushEVs is also talking about this story here - http://pushevs.com/2017/05/30/sk-innovation-will-build-battery-cell-plant-europe/

So who are the car companies going to be that take these new batteries. Logically it is Daimler who will contract all their cells from SK's European factory, to be built into battery packs at their new plant in Kamenz.

Where will the cells from Seosan go? Not the Soul EV, our car looks set to continue as a niche product. Not to China, trade wars are preventing Korean expansion there. Logically then it must be Hyundai. While the I oniq and presumably the N iro EVs will have LG Chem batteries, it seems probable / possible that the Kona and Stoniq EVs will be SK.

Putting this expansion into perspective by 2020 T esla will still be able to produce twice as many EVs as Daimler and Hyundai combined. And the T esla cars will have bigger batteries.

--------------------------------------------------------

As for present SK production. The Soul EV continues at the same slow pace. 1000 / month. At the beginning of May car 24,000 rolled off the production line. I don't know if BAIC is continuing to sell, any of their cars with a Korean battery. But presumably they are contracted to keep buying them at a minimal level.

--------------------------------------------------------

Here's a graphic that helps put SK's plans for 10GWh by 2020 in perspective.

That guess seems to have been confirmed. - Hyundai Motor to release long-range electric vehicle in H1 of 2018
According to Choi from Hyundai Motor, the motor group will diversify its battery suppliers to secure enough supplies and respond more flexibly to market demand. On top of its current supplier LG Chem, the company has also decided to receive batteries from SK Innovation Co. for its new electric vehicle.

----------------------------------------------------------------

update: 1 year later - I was wrong.
The N iro EV will use an SK battery. The K ona EV will use LG Chem. There is no Stonic EV.
If I had to guess the new Soul EV will use SK and the updated I oniq EV LG. Sometime next year maybe.

Latest news of SK Innovation increasing battery capacity by improving the cell chemistry. -
SK Innovation to produce EV batteries with 100 km extension of driving range
Am guessing this 100km extra range is comparing the current Soul EV with one that has the new battery pack.
That implies the new battery chemistry improves the battery capacity by about 55%.

SK Innovation will start the world’s first commercial production of mid- and large-sized pouch-type NCM 811 batteries.. Starting in December this year, the new batteries will be supplied for the production of energy storage systems. For EVs, the company will begin supplying the batteries from the third quarter of 2018, it said. ..The batteries will be manufactured at SK Innovation’s battery production facilities in Seosan, where the company is constructing its fifth and sixth battery production lines to secure a total 3.9 gigawatt hours of battery production capacity.
There's some info about what NCM 811 is here - SK Innovation to begin production of NCM-811 batteries

-
Another expansion of SK production line for EV batteries. - see : SK Innovation invests in battery businesses

The big news is the new plant in Hungary -
The facility in Hungary will add 7.5 gigawatt-hours’ worth of batteries to SK Innovation’s yearly battery production volume.
These are the cells for the M ercedes new EQ series of EVs. It's enough for about 100,000 cars annually. Only 20% of T esla's volume, but M ercedes is coming from nothing. It means pretty much all the production from the Korean plant will be used by Kia, mostly the new N iro EV.
Right now, SK Innovation runs six production lines at its plant in Seosan, South Chungcheong, where it can manufacture as much as 3.9 gigawatt-hours’ worth of batteries per year. A spokesperson explained that the company will build a seventh production line by the second half of next year to expand the capacity to 4.7 gigawatt-hours per year.

SK Innovation held a groundbreaking ceremony for the factory to produce EV batteries in Hungary

Artist's impression of new battery plant at Komarom, Hungary

SK Innovation announced on March 8 (local time) that the company held a groundbreaking ceremony for an EV battery factory in Komarom, Hungary. This plant is SK Innovation's first European battery manufacturing facility and is expected to play a key role as a bridgehead into the European market....
SK Innovation is planning to start production and supply in earnest in early 2020 after the completion of the plant in the second half of 2019 after the stabilization of the facility, a trial run and product certification. In 2022, when all production lines are completed, electric car batteries of 7.5GWh will be annually produced.
There is also a new BYD electric bus factory in the same town - BYD CHOOSES HUNGARY FOR EUROPEAN BUS ASSEMBLY PLANT

-------------------------------------------------------------

As for which of the new EVs get the existing batteries from the Seosan plant that I mentioned above, we are still unsure.

Despite the K ona already being released we know nothing about the battery. Who makes it? What cell chemistry? What TMS?
Lots of rumours, but no facts as yet.

There is no Stonic EV.

N iro EV has the same battery specs as the Kona. Does that mean it has the same battery pack?

New Soul EV is also rumoured to use the same 39.2kWh battery pack as in the K ona EV. But who is going to make it?

That the Hungarian battery plant won't be ready for 3 more years, suggests that the batteries for M ercedes new EQ series of EVs must be coming from Seosan for now.

The most recent brand new Soul EV I have seen was at the 5th Jeju EV Expo in early May 2018. VIN *34202
It seems that worldwide Soul EV sales are about 833 / month over the last few years. ( About 10,000 / year )
Although sales have risen above 1000 / month recently.

As always Norway is the top market. Over 1/3 of all Soul EVs are in Norway. : Norwegian Kia Soul EV registrations

For all cars exported out of Korea ( about 85%) see : Kia: Investor Relations - Monthly Sales Results
You need to download the Overseas Retail Sales spreadsheet.

My count of the sales figures as of early April 2018.
The figures are ( Year :- Overseas + Domestic = Total )
Code:
2014 :- 1,017 + 414 = 1,431
2015 :- 7,286 + 1,116 = 8,402
2016 :- 7,123 + 729 = 7,852
2017 :- 8,666 + 2,161 = 10,827
2018 :- 3,263 + 330 = 3953

Cumulative total = 32,465

---------------------------------------------------------

The Seosan battery factory would need to provide 330 MWh of battery cells to make these 10,000 Soul EVs each year.

So how many 64kWh N iro EVs could be made in second half of this year given 4.7GWh of total production. And nothing is being sent to China for BAIC or to Germany for the M ercedes EQ. My guess is a maximum 30,000. So maybe 15,00 is reasonable. 5,000 in Korea and 10,000 to Norway.

Supposedly the annual production numbers will be K ona EV 18,600 and the N iro EV 21,000.
from Hyundai-Kia Motors to Increase Annual EV Production to 100,000 Units
So in 8 months Hyundai may be able to make 12,400, and in 6 months Kia may be able to make 10,500
Both cars will easily have a much higher demand than this.

An unusually large monthly sales figure for Germany.
German Plug-In Electric Car Market Up 62% In April, Kia Soul EV Surges To 751

If this is really an emission scam whereby these cars will soon be sent to Norway then we should evidence of this in the Norwegian figures.
At present there is no such evidence.

More likely this is just biased reporting from InsideEVs.com. The total European sales for the Kia Soul EV in April were 659.
The 751 figure must include other cars, for example the N iro PHEV.

The Soul EV is sold as used car in Norway, so you want see it in the Norwegian figures as a new car.

I think there are plenty of evidence that Kia is sending Soul EV to Germany for some days and then they are brought to Norway to be used and sold there. But it is not illegal and I don't see it as a emission scam. Just German Kia dealers that can't sell the Soul EV so they send them to the lucky Norwegians ;)

Why would norwegian car buyers talk about it if it didn't exist?

The Norwegian sales figures are done by the registration plates issued.
If you look you will see Import on the right hand side.
Nei means no. Ja means yes.
The total sales for April 2018 is 447
The current sales for May 2018 is 287
I agree many of these are imported, but not all. Obviously there cannot be 751 imports.

More importantly 751 in Germany is greater than the total of Soul EVs sold in the whole of Europe.

The story about cars from Germany being trans-shipped to Norway has been discussed already. Two years ago! On page 1 of this thread.

Birkeland said:
... Many of the EVs sold to Germany ends up in Norway. I live in Norway, and my car comes from Germany as part of a shipment of about 200 cars. The ship arrives at Germany where they are registered so Germany can fulfill an environmental quota of EVs. The next day, the ship continues to Norway where KIA dealership is getting the cars. The demand of KIA Soul EV in Norway has been so high (waiting time for up to 9 months), so KIA Norway are buying cars from other countries to take care of the demand.
....

-
Another site ev-sales.blogspot.com (that I respect a lot more than the one mentioned above) has also reported the anomalous sales result for Soul EVs in April.

From - EV Sales : Germany April 2018

... the German PEV market always delivers surprises, and April was no exception, the Best Selling model last month was the Kia Soul EV (721 units), even if most units end up in Norway (It wouldn't be the first time), this was the best performance for the Kia in 28 months.

They list the numbers for the N iro PHEV separately, so the 721 doesn't include those. It's now harder to see how the sales of the Soul EV in Germany are greater than the sales for the entirety of Europe.

The German data is freely available each month from the German Federal Automobile Transport Agency (KBA)
It is German only. Start here - https://www.kba.de/DE/Home/home_node.html
Click Statistik then Fahrzeuge then Neuzulassungen then Monatliche Neuzulassungen
From that page you can download a PDF file with all the months data.
The 721 figure is correct, but the German Agency has no data showing how many cars are leaving the country.

Because of this I decided to look at the Norwegian data. Here is a chart that shows the total number of Kia Soul EVs in Norway broken down into those directly imported, and those 'sold' in another European country and then shipped into Norway a few days later. Here shown as imports.

The number of 'pre-sold' cars is far greater than I thought. We don't know where all these cars have been shipped from. Many are from Germany but I have seen reports that they are also coming from France, Spain ....

It means all the data on such sites such as ev-sales.blogspot.com is distorted. They only show the country the car was first sold in, and not where the car actually is.

Further complicating the matter is the fact that it is not only brand new cars that are shipped from Germany to Norway. They also ship used cars. From the Norwegian Forum linked above - https://elbilforum.no/forum/index.php?topic=39025.0
New Titanium Gray - fully-packed from Kia Norway: 276,400, -
New Titanium Gray imported fully-packed from dealer: 259,800, -
But slightly used (15,000km) fully-packed Titanium Gray imported (Germany) from dealer: 239,000, -
They also talk of new cars being shipped from the US and Canada to Norway. Obviously not an EU emissions scam.

There's a lengthy article about Norwegian imports of used EVs here - From California to Oslo: foreign subsidies fuel Norway's e-car boom, for now

My count of the sales figures up to end of June 2018. (1,183 Soul EVs sold this month globally, but only 57 in the USA)

2015 :- 7,286 + 1,116 = 8,402
2016 :- 7,123 + 729 = 7,852
2017 :- 8,666 + 2,511 = 11,177
2018 :- 4,687 + 1,139 = 5,826
Cumulative total = 34,688

July 2nd 2018 : SK has begun production of NMC811 battery cells for the N iro EV - Link to Korean new article

Update - 17 June 2018
Kia has rejected SK Innovation's new NCM811 chemistry at the last minute.
I can only assume they have just had some bad news while testing this.

http://www.jejutwn.com/news/article.html?no=9326
N iro EV will no longer use the NCM811 batteries - it will now be NCM622 - still SK Innovation.
and
http://www.hkbs.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=475921
the new battery is NCM622 equivalent - made by mixing two different chemistries NCM811 and NCM111

News article about latest production from SK Innovation in Korean JoongAng Daily - SK Innovation battery shipments pick up speed

SK Innovation said its growth is in line with the sales increase of electric cars that it supplies batteries to such as Kia Motors’ N iro plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and Soul electric vehicle and Hyundai Motor’s I oniq plug-in hybrid electric vehicle...

My estimate of the kWh of battery needed for the cars sold in 7 months.
Soul EV = 7,094 * 33.5 = 237,649 kWh (this was 75% of their total battery production)
N iro PHEV = ? something small
I oniq PHEV = ? something small

The Soul EV sold the same this year as last year so the figures given in the news article are garbage.

What is not stated is that production of batteries for the N iro EV began in July.
Battery production in the future will obviously more than double, because the N iro has a 64kWh pack.
