Hyundai AE (All Electric) to be available before Chevy BOLT

I test drove the Chevy Bolt in Northern California yesterday. Nice car with a nimble, solid feel to it.
The strength of re-gen is comparable, (maybe slightly stronger when using the button on the back of the steering wheel) to Soul EV with slightly better acceleration.

It's quite a bit smaller than my Soul EV and a tiny bit smaller than a Prius. The hood/front of the car was alarmingly small.
I enjoyed driving it but I have to wonder about it's safety/crash rating.

A 238 mile range is certainly compelling.
When compared to Soul EV the lack of cargo capacity, the narrowed, compact but ergonomic interior is not.

-- It's a pretty small car with an upward, "sitting on it" look/feel rather than the stout, "sitting in it" feel of my Soul EV.

The dealer had SOLD his first two shipments (at the $40K MSRP price - minus state & fed. incentives) which were due in starting next week.
Leases will be available but he didn't have a quote on one.

In North America the B olt has arrived first. Hyundai seems to be focussed on other markets for the I oniq Electric.

Here's an interesting video on the production of the I oniq Electric. The video company has carefully edited and used computer graphics to remove all sight of the human workers.

MAX speed of the IoniQ Electric : https://youtu.be/ZX4j-u8vXG0
165km/h at the wheel (172km/h on dashboard).

Next version of the I oniq EV - out in February 2017.

... will have four centimetres more rear roof space ... ---- see : http://www.etnews.com/20170103000233
Update - In the end they managed less than 2.

This was my main complaint about the current version. I guess they were listening!
No other major changes.

I live on an island. My journeys are short and slow. I have never had range anxiety in any season or weather conditions. That the I oniq EV may be 20% more efficient at these slow speeds than the Soul EV is not so important in my case. The greater battery pack of the Chevy B olt is actually a negative on the island, because you would be hauling all that extra weight which you never have need for.

The trade off to reduce drag on the I oniq EV is a low sloping rear roof. Tall adults do not fit in the back of an I oniq. For me it is more common to drive with 4 adults in the car than to take the car off the island to do a lengthy road trip.

----

There was also a budget version that with no navigation, just a 5 inch screen. This became by far the most popular version here in Jeju.
It was called the I trim and was available from April 2017 to April 2018. Now discontinued.

The screen looks like this. It is brand new. It still has white tape around the screen to prevent scratches on the empty black spacing.

and here is a Korean blog post showing a DIY attempt to replace the screen and put in a navigation unit.

The other two trims here in Korea for the I oniq are the N trim and Q trim.
The N trim comes with a 7 inch navigation. Seen below. The Q trim has an 8 inch navigation identical to the one in our Souls.

Hyundai is switching the I oniq Electric in Korea from Chademo to CCS1 next month.
In Europe the I oniq Electric has CCS2.
In North America, when it finally arrives, it will have CCS1.

Details - http://www.etnews.com/20170222000205

The timing of this decision is weird. Am wondering why they didn't do this a year ago.
All the Hyundai Service centers have brand new Chademo c hargers.

Almost certainly all new Kia EV's from now on will be CCS1.
What happens to the Soul EV? I don't know.

think it is possible to create a chademo to combo adapter?
Maybe possible, but I don't think it will ever happen.

Has been discussed many times before -

For the i 3 : CHAdeMO to SAE J1772 DC (Combo) adaptor?

For the l eaf : Any Chademo adaptor plug for SAE Combo plug charger?

Even if it could here in Korea the government is not keen on allowing adapters. This is a problem for the T esla cars recently released here.
All other EVs are using the J 1772 for slow charging, which is why the Govt. chose CCS1 not CCS2.
But T esla has just been released with the European Mennekes. They will be incompatible with everything.

In France, we have a confirmation for 32A on Type 2 AC  : http://www.automobile-propre.com/forums/hyundai-ionic-electrique/deux-ioniq-a-la-maison-t7051.html#p91079

and 27A with the same EVSE on a Soul EV (to check). :|

Presumably the Soul EV is a 2016 in which the OBC limits the current. A 2015 Soul EV would not do this.
Interesting to see that the I oniq EV does not have a limitation imposed by the OBC. I have yet to hear of an I oniq OBC failure.

Excellent discussion of the I oniq, with comparisons to other BEVs and PHEVs at the thread below:
http://www.cleanmpg.com/community/index.php?threads/54013/
Agreed. That's a great link. Thanks.

Further info on the Hybrid 12V battery. Here in Korea the I oniq Hybrid was released last year with the 12V battery at the back (seen in the graphic at the left). But in 2017 they have released the new version without the 12V battery, (seen in the graphic at the right).

The most unusual thing about the I oniq is how rapidly they are making changes. In just 1 year.
1/ Hybrid loses 12V battery.
2/ Korean Electric switches from Chademo to CCS1
3/ New 'Taxi' version in Korea with greater rear headroom.

And the biggest change of all, that next year the battery size will be increased.

There's some more info about the PHEV launch here - http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=3030360

Interesting to see:
... All versions of the I oniq less than one year old will be guaranteed for 75 percent of its purchasing price on the used-car market, under the condition the driver buys another Hyundai within three years...
This comes after an uproar by existing owners, that all the changes occurring in Year 2 make their Year 1 vehicles less valuable.

Also an article here - http://english.etnews.com/20170228200002

Repeats the news we had talked about earlier -
...Hyundai Motor Company introduced 2017 I ONIQ Hybrid and 2017 I ONIQ Electric at the same time. It has secured wider space by improving headroom of backseats and improved connectivity convenience by adding Apple’s Car Play to navigation system. It also has secured additional trunk space by combining 12V supplement battery, which was equipped for previous I ONIQ Hybrid, with high-voltage lithium-ion battery and changed Electric’s filling inlet to a combo-type inlet that allows both rapid and slow charging to take place from single inlet...
------------------------------------------------------------

Two more bits of info about the new I oniq Electric - http://news.heraldcorp.com/view.php?ud=20170227000353

The battery warranty has changed from 10 year / 200,000 km to ‘unlimited guarantee for life’ . Am checking what this means for degradation.

Also a car sharing service starts in Jeju in April.
